I had an earlier version of the Franklin Spanish-English Dictionary which had some nice features but a practically unreadable screen. I settled on a different dictionary by Sharp, which served well but lacked some features I wanted. I decided to take a chance on this later model Franklin hoping they would have fixed the screen problem.

They did. Screen size is adequate and keys are easy to use. Screen quality is very good.

Here are the qualities I like: it’s easy to use. You can toggle between English-Spanish and Spanish-English. As an intermediate Spanish student, I use the dictionary a lot for fast look-up. There’s just no comparison to using a book, which is slow to use and heavy to carry.

Best of all, the Franklin not only translates all verbs but shows them in every conjugation. It’s as useful as the book 501 Spanish Verbs, but again, small, fast, and light. Even better, you can enter a conjugated form of the verb and it will take you to the infinitive. So if you read “muestro” and don’t know its meaning, just type it in and it will take you to “mostrar.” 501 Verbs doesn’t do that, and there are thousands of verbs, not just 501.

This is a perfect answer to my reference needs, probably the only tool I’ll use for almost all my study. It would also be indispensable for travel in a Spanish-speaking country.

Small criticisms: the “speaking dictionary” feature is marginal, as sound quality is poor. It could be helpful for determining where the accent falls if you’re not sure. And page turn is just slightly slow. If you’re leafing through conjugations to find the irregular subjuntive for “ser,” it takes a second or two to make each page turn. Still, way faster than picking up a book and turning pages until you get to the right verb.

What’s missing: a true phrase translator. It would be nice to be able to type in “de hecho” and learn that it means “in fact.” You might find that out under “hacer,” but the next step for a full-feature e-dictionary is idiomatic phrase translation.

Until then, I’m really excited about my new Franklin. Oh, it also has an English dictionary and thesauraus. All reference are Mirriam-Webster.

Very good product. Great price. I highly recommend.

This product claims to pronounce the words that are typed in (“English Speaking/ Talking”). When I got the product, I was disappointed to find out that it doesn’t speak at all- it didn’t even have speakers anywhere on it! If you want a dictionary that actually speaks, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU!!! I suggest that you look somewhere else. If you just want a dictionary, this product still wouldn’t be so great because it doesn’t have have the written pronunciation for words. So, if you want the pronunciation at all, look for another dictionary

I received my purchase so fast, perfect conditions, new…and it was not expensive at all. This translator doesn’t translate complete phrases, but word by word.
