Simultaneous Interpretation & Translation for Live Events » Translators http://www.translatinginterpreting.com A Guide to Hiring Interpreters & Translators Tue, 25 Oct 2011 18:48:51 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.2.1 Careers for Interpreters and Translators http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/careers-for-interpreters-and-translators/ http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/careers-for-interpreters-and-translators/#comments Mon, 18 Oct 2010 21:39:21 +0000 Ron http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/careers-for-interpreters-and-translators/ Have you considered a career as an interpreter or translator, but are not sure if either field would be an agreeable one for you? Alternatively, are you one of many people who often assume that an interpreter and a translator are one in the same? Let us confer their distinct qualities as well as describe some specific careers in each field.

First, both an interpreter and a translator convert one “source” language to another “target” language. This is done throughout our global societies. In addition, for both an interpreter and a translator, several skills are required. They both require much more than simply translating words from one language to another language. On the contrary, both careers require translating concepts or ideas. Next, they each require a strong comprehension of the subject matter by the translator. Furthermore, both an interpreter and a translator need to be perceptive to the cultures of the two languages involved.

Further, an interpreter and a translator require fluency in at least two languages. Some professions may require fluency in three languages. The first language is called their “active” or “native” language, and the second is called their “passive” language. Their job is to interpret their passive language into their active language; the one they know best.

When looking at the differences between and interpreter and a translator, it becomes apparent that an interpreter converts one “spoken” language to another “spoken” language. In doing so, the interpreter must use excellent analytical skills to present the subject matter from one culture to another culture. A thorough comprehension of the subject matter is required, thus prior research is often needed by the interpreter.

In addition, there are two types of interpretation. “Simultaneous Interpretation” requires a high level of concentration as the interpreter will express a sentence while the speaker is still talking. It is often used in court systems as well as at international conferences. At simultaneous interpretation events, interpreters will often work in pairs for periods of 30 minutes.

“Consecutive Interpretation” is used in person-to-person communication. The interpreter will sometimes take notes. He or she will speak after the speaker has said several words or sentences.

On the other end, a translator will transfer “written” material from one language to another. Outstanding writing skills, strong analytical ability, and fine editing skills are required of a translator. As stated before, a translator does not simply change each word in one language to another language. The practice requires the translator to perform several steps. First, he/she must read the text in its entirety. Next, unknown words must be looked up and understood in the writing’s context. More research may be required if the subject matter is unclear to the translator. When writing to a specific audience, the translator is also required to keep cultural references in mind. In addition, a translator will do several revisions before they have the final text completed.

As described individually below, Interpreters and Translators work in an array of areas such as business, social service and entertainment.

Conference Interpreter: A Conference Interpreter will work at conferences where there are non-English speaking people of multiple languages. It is often preferred that they are able to translate two “passive” languages into one “active” language. For example, they might be required to interpret French and Spanish into English.
Guide Interpreter: A Guide Interpreter will escort foreign visitors in the United States, or they will escorts United States visitors abroad. They often work in pairs in 30-minute intervals. This often involves travel, which is likely to be an advantage to someone in this field.
Judiciary Interpreter or Translator: Each of these people will work in court for non-English speaking people. They must not only be familiar with the languages, but also the United States judicial system and the judicial systems in other countries. It is essential that they remain indifferent so not to modify the content. They may also have to translate written documents and read aloud.
Literary Translator: A Literary Translator will work closely with an author to reproduce their work in another language. The focus is on reproducing the deliberate meanings of the work. They translate literature such as poetry, books, short stories, and journal articles from one language to another.
Localization Translators: A Localization Translator will completely adapt a product for use in a different language and culture, such as software, internet sites, and manufacturing. The objective is for the product to appear as though it was originated in the country where it will be sold. Knowledge of the target audience, a strong computer background, and a firm grasp of the languages to be translated are essential.
Sign Language Interpreter: A Sign Language Interpreter must be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). They will communicate between deaf or hard of hearing people, and people who can hear. Just like foreign language interpreting, sign language interpreting requires more than replacing a spoken word with a sign. Ideas to be conveyed as well as the cultures involved, are important components in sign language interpretation.
Salary Rate for Interpreters and Translators
There is a broad variation in salary scale for an interpreter or translator. It becomes obvious that the greater demand for a specific language, the higher the earnings become. Along with language, subject matter, experience, education, employer, all play a role in determining salary. In 2008, information from the Occupational Employment Statistics reveal that the middle income earned by interpreters and translators ranged from $28,940 to $52,240. In addition, statistics from the National Employer Matrix tell us that the average employment growth for an interpreter or translator will grow at a rate of 22% between 2008 and 2018.

There are some downsides to having a career in these fields. One of the negative factors to having a career as an Interpreter or Translator is that the professions can be grueling and stressful. In addition, you are often working under a deadline. If you decide to freelance, you will have to manage your own finances, which could lead to a slow paying process by your clients.

Despite the drawbacks and stresses of a career in translation or interpreting, there are some major advantages as well. For example, you have the ability to control your schedule and your workload. There is a low rate of work related injuries. In addition, there is a variety of concentrations in these fields. Flexibility is also a positive factor, if you are looking for time to pursue some other interests.

The Difference Professional Medical Translators Can Bring http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/the-difference-professional-medical-translators-can-bring/ http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/the-difference-professional-medical-translators-can-bring/#comments Sat, 21 Aug 2010 19:46:43 +0000 Ron http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/the-difference-professional-medical-translators-can-bring/ In order to meet the growing health requirements of people from around the globe, various companies continue to develop innovative medical products and equipment. The problem, however, in developing and marketing products for the medical industry is managing languages and meeting the standards of international regulatory laws. That’s why medical translation services are highly in-demand today. With the help of professional medical translators, companies can avoid mistakes that can delay product approval or cause unexpected disasters.

Since medical and pharmaceutical translation is a highly specialized discipline and should only be done by qualified translators, translation companies only hire professionals that have a rich experience in the medical industry, in pharmacy or in biomedical engineering. In order to provide excellent medical translation services, translation companies hone in on the expertise of translators who already have a good command of the language and modern jargons of medicine.

In translating medical documents, knowing a foreign language is not enough. A translator without any scientific or medical background will only find himself dumbfounded when faced with a document containing medical lingo. A text simply needs to be understood first before it can be translated. Which is why companies providing medical translation services prefer translators who are more than just PhD-certified, they should also be native speakers of the language they are translating into. A company that acquires the service of a medical translator for his bi-lingual skill alone is inviting disaster. Medical and scientific writing follow a certain turn of phrase and style that non-medical practitioners will not understand.

An excellent translation company has a team of highly qualified translators, editors and proofreaders to ensure the quality of the medical translation. All of the members have a strong background in medical science or biomedicine. To meet the demand for medical translation services today, translation companies hire freelance medical translators for projects that are too large or that require a fast turnaround. Building a team is necessary for any project because when a text is checked several times by different people, even the most minor mistakes will be avoided. Freelance translators also have to undergo the same strict tests and evaluation regular translators go through.

Absence of the professional translators http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/absence-of-the-professional-translators/ http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/absence-of-the-professional-translators/#comments Tue, 03 Aug 2010 09:49:52 +0000 Ron http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/absence-of-the-professional-translators/ I was traveling to one of the small town of Chennai but prominent and very popular known as Mahabalipuram in southern part of India for a conference organized by ICSF a orginisations which is actively involve in to support of our fisheries and fisherman of the continent and the rest of the world. The best thing was that ICSF works in association and accordance with ILO (International Labor Orginisations) to provide the basic rights to the all fisherman and fisherwoman of the world.

The delegates were from different countries representing their countries fishing community’s problems and try to resolve by discussion on various problems which the fishermen community is facing on day to day basis. The conference was organized in such way that all the delegates were able to understand the discussions no matter what language they can understand or they speak. As being the language translation equipments providing company, the conference organizers had called us to provide translation equipments and its related services. The organizers had called the translators of their own from the respective countries as per the language translation requirements. The delegations were from Thailand, South Africa, Japan, Portugal, Indenosia, Tanzania and many more countries along with Indian delegations.

As most of us know that organizing an any conference takes lot of effort and hard work, even still something gets incomplete or up to the required mark. At Mahabalipuram too absence of some professional translators for the conference created lots of confusion as who is going to interoperate which language and from which booth, because all the booth are dedicated to a particular language and the signals were getting transmitted on to the receivers, fixed frequency or a channel dedicated to the booth. We have been told to provide simultaneous system for up to four languages including floor, accordingly we provided 3 booths for the same. As the delegates or the speakers were using their own native languages during the presentations and questions and answer session, the interpreters used to get puzzled as from which booth the interpretation will go for the language which is not specified and the delegates were to getting confused which language to select to get desired interpreted language. Fortunately the interpreters were very experienced and each was able to translate two or more languages. It helped at least shifting from one to another and after figuring out the way to control the situation, by evening we finally found the solution to the delegates as at which point what channel to select to find their desired translated language.

As a simultaneous interpretation service providing company we undranstant the situation and help to find solutions immediately if such situation occurs at any point of time, and we share the same with many people like us across the world so that simultaneous interpretation service providing community gets informed and take initiative steps to avoid such situations and we to seek such information’s by the other similar service providers.

Language translators help you understand the world http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/language-translators-help-you-understand-the-world/ http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/language-translators-help-you-understand-the-world/#comments Thu, 22 Jul 2010 19:47:11 +0000 Ron http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/language-translators-help-you-understand-the-world/ Language translation means translating documents from one language into another. These documents could be a project report, medical report, user manuals, letters, faxes or any other paperwork. It could also involve website translation, where website is translated from one language say German into another language say French. In certain cases, website localization may also be involved. Here the website is customized to include nuances of the same language. E.g when translating a website in US English into UK English, words like favor and honor used in US English have to be converted in favour and honour in UK English. All this is achieved by using the services of expert language translators.

The rise in globalization saw an increase in demand for language translation services. To capitalize on this opportunity, many translation companies have entered this business. As a result, customers are highly benefited due to the competitive prices charged by these companies. However they also face the prospect of making a wrong choice of choosing the language translator. This is due to the fact that there are no standards considered as benchmarks of the service provided. So here is the checklist of important points that every customer must pay attention to when choosing a language translation service.

How to select the suitable language translation company?

What are the certifications held by translation company? Is it ISO 9001 and EN 15038 certified? These certificates denote the highest quality of service provided by the company. Are the old clients of the translator satisfied with the service standards of the company? Did they get excellent service from the company? Was the company able to meet deadline successfully? Interested in translating medical document in Italian? If so, is the translator medically-qualified? Is he native Italian speaker? Getting specialized documents like medical reports from a medical expert is important, as many medical terms cannot be understood by non-medical professionals. This can lead to translation errors that can be fatal. Also asking a native Italian speaker to do the translation will help in getting quality translation than getting it done from a non-native Italian speaker. Is the language translator you are considering located abroad? If so, are they ready to accept payment through the payment method of your choice? Is the translation company ready to provide translated document in your preferred format? E.g. it must provide you with the translated document in PDF format, if that is what you want.

These are common tips that you can use to choose the right translator and get the best translation service.

Role And Status Of Translators And Interpreters http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/role-and-status-of-translators-and-interpreters/ http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/role-and-status-of-translators-and-interpreters/#comments Mon, 14 Jun 2010 21:00:44 +0000 Ron http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/role-and-status-of-translators-and-interpreters/ In the colonial context, we find translators and interpreters, but particularly interpreters taking on an amazing range of responsibilities which go far beyond linguistic mediation. Interpreters in the colonial context acted as guides, explorers, brokers, diplomats, ambassadors and advisers on Indian or local affairs; that is why they were sometimes branded as traitors, because they were indispensable to the colonial authorities. In other contexts, too, translators and interpreters, in oral traditions such as the African tradition were expected to act as spokesmen for their communities, not just as linguistic mediators. In the eighteenth century in Turkey, the duty of the Naval Dragoman included the supervision of the collection of taxes from non-Muslim subjects, though later on the 1839 Tanzimat limited his responsibility to interpreting again, i.e. strictly linguistic mediation.

In terms of status, the highest status attained by translators and interpreters seems to have been linked to the profession being hereditary, as in the case of the ‘wise men’ in the oral tradition of Africa, who passed on their skills to their sons. Other examples include the TSUJIIS in Japan, who exercised family monopolies on interpreting in this area from the seventeenth century until the end of Japan’s isolation in the second half of the nineteenth century. There are also the Greek Phanariots in Turkey in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, who similarly had sole control of the profession. All these groups were highly regarded by their communities and earned a very respectable living.

WORKING FRAMEWORKS

Another interesting area worth investigating concerns the use of interpreters in contexts where we very rarely see them used today. The role of interpreters in educational contexts is of entry on the Hungarian tradition to bring it up to date, following the unfortunate death of Dr. Gyorgy Rado in 1994. Sara Laviosa-Braithwaite provided invaluable support as my Research Assistant for practically the whole of 1995. Juan Sager helped edit a number of entries in the summer of 1996, and Kirsten Malmkjaer stepped in later that summer to give the editing a final push.

Even with so much good will and generous assistance from a large number of people, there are bound to be some errors and infelicities, given the scope of the enterprise.

In the view of aforementioned description, the translators as well as the interpreters are playing an important role in the society while they are called traitor. However, their role neither ignored nor be abolished from the society because of their role for the society. They are the indiscernible part of the society.

How Do The Bible’s Translators Hurt The Women-1? http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/how-do-the-bibles-translators-hurt-the-women-1/ http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/how-do-the-bibles-translators-hurt-the-women-1/#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 21:00:17 +0000 Ron http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/how-do-the-bibles-translators-hurt-the-women-1/ This is the eleventh article of the series: “The Foreigner woman in Bible versus Quran”

In the previous articles, we have seen that from the Language point of view, the “foreign” woman is the alien or the exotic or the outsider woman.  However, the Bible has another notion.

As confirmed by the Bible, the “foreign” woman is the non-Israelite woman or the non-Jewish woman.

As a result, any non-Israelite or any non-Jewish woman is a “foreign” woman.

This indicates that the women in the Bible are but one of two categories; they are either Legitimate (genuine) or Foreign (strange).

In the present article, we will analyze and discuss the translation of just one verse that talks about the “strange women” in 18 different versions of the Bible.  Although this issue needs some patience and watchfulness; however, it deserves studying to prove how enormously the translators of some Biblical versions did their Job in reference to the original Hebrew Scripture.

Very simply, the verse 1 Kings 11:1 says “and King Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites”.

It is a very clear and simple statement that just needs one who knows Hebrew and English to translate it as it is.

However, the smart reader will see herein what the translators of 18 Biblical versions have done when translating this verse, 1 Kings 11:1.

Contemporary English Version translates 1 Kings 11 as follows:

“The LORD did not want the Israelites to worship foreign gods, so he had warned them not to marry anyone who was not from Israel. Solomon loved his wife, the daughter of the king of Egypt. But he also loved some women from Moab, Ammon, and Edom, and others from Sidon and the land of the Hittites”.

The above underlined statement is NOT found in the original Hebrew Scripture (Tanakh = the Hebrew Bible).

Also, the other 17 Biblical versions given in this article do not say that.

This phrase is but the opinion of the scholars who translate Contemporary English Version.

This is an example to show you that the scholars who translate the Bible sometimes put their opinions as if it is the word of God.  As a matter of facts, there are hundreds of examples like that throughout the entire Bible.

In addition, this added phrase that is not the word of God may hurt the non Israelite women. It means that if a man marries any non Israelite women he will worship foreign gods? In other words, are all the non Israelite women unfaithful?

Some versions put the following titles as headers for the passage that begins with 1 Kings 11:1: “Solomon Turns from God” or “Solomon’s Unfaithfulness to God”.

Also, Contemporary English Version translates “many foreign women” to “some women” without “strange”.

Also the New Century Version translates the “daughter of Pharaoh” to the “daughter of the king of Egypt”; herein, the scholars translate Pharaoh to the king of Egypt. Although Pharaoh is the king of Egypt, however, the translators should translate the word of God as it is.

In addition, the New Century Version translates “many strange women” to “many women who were not from Israel”.  Here again, this is an interpretation of the scholars who translate the New Century Version.  Of course they are right because the strange or the foreign women are biblically defined as the non Israelite women; but this is not the issue.

The issue is one has to Be Honest if he translates the Word of God!

New Century Version says: “many women who were not from Israel”; it does not use either the word strange or the word foreign that are found in the other 15 versions given herein in this article.  Also, New Century Version says:” from Israel” although Israel is not mentioned in the original Hebrew verse.

Furthermore, the New International Reader’s Version says:” many women besides Pharaoh’s daughter. They were from other lands” it does not use either the word strange (or the word foreign) that is found in the other 15 versions. Also, “from other lands” is not present in the original Hebrew verse.

On the other hand, The Message says that King Solomon was obsessed with women. Pharaoh’s daughter was only the first of the many foreign women he loved. I do not know why it says that Pharaoh’s daughter was the first although the original Hebrew verse does not say that; also the other 17 versions do not say that.

Upon Comparing King James Version with New King James Version and 21st Century King James Version, you find that “strange women” in King James Version became “foreign women” in New King James Version and 21st Century King James Version.  Also, Zidonians changed to Sidonians.

However, when comparing the American Standard Version with the New American Standard Bible, you find no changes between the two versions except the use of “along with” instead of “together with”.

Conclusion:

1) The Bible declares that King Solomon had a company of Multi-Foreign-Nations-Women. He loved and married many strange women, an Egyptian, the daughter of Pharaoh, and women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites. Although his wives were 700 or 1000, however, the Bible does not say that he married an Israelite woman.

2) The translators of the 18 versions of the Bible added to the verse 1 Kings 11:1 seven words and phrases that are not the word of God.   I wonder how the translators can put their words or phrases as if they are the Word of God; Are not they afraid of the Lord God?

3) This phenomenon of adding statements, phrases or words that are not the word of God is common in the Bible.  Hence, the Bible is not 100% the word of God.

4) The added phrase in Contemporary English Version of the Bible that is not the word of God may hurt the non Israelite women. It means that if a man marries any non Israelite women he will worship foreign gods? In other words, the non Israelite women are unfaithful and they lead their husbands to worship foreign gods.

==================================

About this issue in the Quran:

1) It should be emphasized that the Quran does not talk about King Solomon’s wives.

2) In the translation of the Quran, no one dares to add a word that is not the Word of Allah.

3) In the Quran, anyone adds a word or a phrase to the Scripture and says that it is the Word of the Lord; he will dwell in Eternal Fire in the Hereafter.

4) The Quran is 100% the absolute Word of the Lord, the Almighty Creator.

5) In the whole Quran, the term “strange woman” is not mentioned therein; all women are equal in respect to their rights and responsibilities regardless of race, color, location etc.

6) Last but not least, anyone says or believes that the Tremendous Prophet King Solomon was sinful or unfaithful will dwell in the Eternal Hell in the Hereafter.  Do not mess up with the Prophets of Allah.

Verse 1 Kings 11:1 in 18 different versions of the Bible

(1) The best two translations are King James Version and Young’s Literal Translation

King James Version

But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites:

Young’s Literal Translation

And king Solomon hath loved many strange women, and the daughter of Pharaoh, females of Moab, Ammon, Edom, Zidon, [and] of the Hittites,

(2) The following 13 translations used foreign women instead of strange women

New International Version

Why Choose Translation Companies Instead of Individual Translators? http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/why-choose-translation-companies-instead-of-individual-translators/ http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/why-choose-translation-companies-instead-of-individual-translators/#comments Sun, 23 May 2010 19:46:18 +0000 Ron http://www.translatinginterpreting.com/why-choose-translation-companies-instead-of-individual-translators/ Swift international business development brings boom of translation industries. Many companies like to outsource their translation tasks instead of setting up a specific translation department, as they think they could get better results and focus on their core business. Although there are thousands of translation providers all over the world, they generally belong two typical categories, that is, translation companies and individual translators. If you need to translate something, what kind of translation suppliers will you choose?

Individual translators always could offer better prices, undoubtedly, because neither the client nor the translator needs to pay extra to the intermediary institutions. But for those who need translation services like multimedia translation or software translation & localization, they probably have no idea to test the freelancers’ translation quality, efficiency, experience, etc. However, translation company is different. Almost everything there goes formal.

Professional translation companies have the capability of offering competitive prices while still ensure you quality translation result, especially Asian language translation companies. There is always a popular saying that you get what you pay for. Rocket-bottom prices have higher risks of generating poor results. Different from free translators, opting for formal translation companies, you have less danger to get sub-standard quality but still maintaining reasonable prices. These companies are always willing to provide their typical cases for your study as well as free trial services, for example, free trial translation or multilingual desktop publishing test.

Reputable translating companies always stipulate strict tests and rules to choose or standardize their translation or interpreting staff. The members they hire always have high educational degrees, translation/interpretation certifications or seasonal experience in specific fields like medical, software, technical, etc. These companies could demonstrate that they have already mastered the needed competence and glossaries for offering honest, correct translation and delivering the same style, sense and purpose of the source text. Plus, most of them often employ specific workers to proofread, review, revise, edit, or confirm their tasks’ correctness, readability, quality and other aspects prior to the final delivery.

Excellent project management is another feature of professional translation companies. Project management team plays an important role in helping clients organize and manage their translation or localization projects. They could ensure that the clear lines of communication are always kept open, so once clients have problems or questions, they could help solve in minimum time.

All in all, translation companies have higher possibility to offer high level translation and interpretation services. But if you unluckily pick up a bad company, you also couldn’t get satisfactory results. Don’t forget to make preparation, compare different companies, read their histories, have trial tests, etc. before formally cooperating with them.
